Claxton's homework!

A few weeks ago we received an email from our friends over at Claxton's headquarters in Yorkshire. It's springtime and that means that it's time for the Spring 2019 release by the British independent bottler. The official press release mentioned the five very promising new bottlings and this week a nice box of samples arrived in Oss. We've got some nice homework to do!

We'll start a small serie of reviews with the recently bottled 10yo Miltonduff. The spirit was distilled in november 2008 and was bottled earlier this year making it the second Miltonduff bottling in the Claxton's Single Cask range. A first fill bourbon barrel, cask 1961-700925, was used to mature the spirit to whisky it is now. As always no chill filtering or artifiical colouring was applied before filling 248 bottles. The ABV in the barrel was measured at 55,8% and that's how it ended up in the bottles as well. Let's have a go at this!

Notes by Peter

  • Nose: Toffee, vanilla, herbs, orange peel and some coconut.
  • Taste: Creamy vanilla, sweet apple, orange, cinnamon and chocolate.
  • Finish: Medium long, with toffee and a bit of coconut.

Very well balanced! A real surprise!

Notes by Jeroen

  • Nose: At the first sniff I get a hint of sweet marzipan, almonds, honey and more nutty notes. A bit like the Turkish baklava pastries. Later on some citrus develops.
  • Taste: Soft and creamy mouthfeel. A bit of a nutty character here as well. Fresh citrus notes complete the palate.
  • Finish: Nice length with all of the flavours present.

I have to agree with Peter about the balance of this nice Miltonduff. The €65,00 retail price  is not on the cheap side for a ten year old whisky but you get a very fine dram for it.

We would like to thank Hugo Caprichoso, Brand Development Manager at Claxton's Spirits, for sending us this nice package of samples!
