Glen Spey 1995, G&M Connoisseurs Choice

GM

Last month we received some very nice samples from our friends at Gordon & MacPhail. These samples represent the launch of the new the new G&M style. We've already done reviews on two Caol Ila expressions and a wonderful Glen Elgin. With two more to go, now it's time to review a 1995 Glen Spey.

Glen Spey is a distillery owned by Diageo. Normally the produced whisky is used in blended whisky's, especially J&B whisky. You may find a 12yo Glen Spey in the Flora and Fauna series but most whisky bottled as Glen Spey is bottled by independent bottlers. Gordon & MacPhail is one of the independents that have released Glen Spey whisky. This is their latest expression.

This particular whisky is the result of two refill hogsheads married together. The whisky was distilled in 1995 and was bottled this year at the age of 22 years. The ABV was brought down to 46%, the former standard ABV for the Connoisseurs Choice range. Of course the other standards, natural color and no chill filtering, were respected in this bottling. Time to get a taste of this one.

Notes by Peter

  • Nose: Very fresh, apple, pear, wood and a bit of caramel
  • Taste: Apple, orange peel, a bit of charcoal, woodspices
  • Finish: Medium length, wood, pepper an a bit of a bitter note

A nice whisky that maybe could use some more sweet notes.

 Notes by Jeroen

  • Nose: Fruity notes, apple, pear, banana, some vanilla too, maybe even some white chocolate
  • Taste: A bit of a peppery start, quickly taken over by fresh fruity notes, again apple, pear and some berries too
  • Finish: Not a very long finish, mostly fruity notes here.

A nice whisky, very drinkable but not very special.

Again we thank Gordon & MacPhail for the opportunity to taste this expression.
